Practical notes on AI for small business.

2026-09-16

Your missed calls are going to a competitor.

When someone calls a plumber, an electrician, or a dentist, they aren’t browsing. They have an urgent need, right now. If you don’t pick up, they don’t wait politely — they call the next business on the list. A missed call isn’t a missed call. It’s a customer you never met.

Voicemail won’t save you. Nobody with a burst pipe leaves a voicemail and sits by the phone hoping. Voicemail is where urgent calls go to die.

You have three honest options. One: answer every call yourself — impossible when you’re on a job. Two: hire a receptionist — wonderful once you have full-time call volume; before that, it’s the most expensive way to catch a handful of calls a week. Three: an AI voice receptionist that picks up on the first ring, takes the message or books the appointment, and texts you a summary.

When not to buy one: if you already answer nearly every call, don’t — you don’t have the problem. If most of your calls are spam, fix that first. We’ll tell you this on the quote form before you spend anything, because selling you a fix for a problem you don’t have is how agencies lose trust.

What it won’t do: it won’t close the sale for you, and it says it’s automated up front. Your callers deserve to know they’re talking to an AI — and they’d rather talk to an honest AI than a voicemail.
